Filip Svehla (1991) belongs to the youngest generation of Czech contemporary artists. A recent graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, he studied under prof. Jiří Sopko, prof. Michael Rittstein, and Robert Šalanda. Filip continued his studies in Utrecht, Netherlands. After his graduation his exploration of light and artistic methods led him to an extensive stay in Valencia, Spain as well as India. This year he was selected as one of TFC’s artists in residence in Miami, FL. Filip lives and works in Prague.

At first glance, Filip Švehla's paintings attract attention mainly with their colors. His current style did not fully develop until after graduation, when his one-year stay in Valencia, played the key role in that development. The lighting conditions, together with the scenery of the industrial district in which he lived during his Spanish sojourn, caused a fundamental evolution of his artistic output. Peeling plaster, disparate facades, protruding insulation elements, demolished parts of houses and spaces were the embodiment of the objects he carried in his head all the time, but through figurative painting he still could not find the right path to them. His effort to capture the essence of the shape thus resulted in abstract canvases, on which he applied colors in dense layers, while focused mainly by their surface, structure and the possibilities of sensory action.
